🏏 A round up of the cricket matches:

  • Our Year 7s took front and centre this week as the U12 As played a game of the season contender against an ambitious St Edmunds side. Fielding first, Pennthorpe were able to take wickets and three run outs to restrict their runs to 93, ensuring it was a competitive total to chase. With the bat, we were set up nicely with 25 to retire from Sam, before Levi hit 19 quick runs – including two boundaries – towards the end of the game to see Pennthorpe over the line with a ball and a wicket to spare.
  • Meanwhile, U12 Bs fought valiantly but came out on the wrong side of the scoreline this time around by 6 wickets. Having opted to bat first, the team faced some pacy, accurate bowls that could only set up a total of 67-4 before St Edmunds took to the square. Both their opening batters retired at 25, leaving their remaining ones to catch Pennthorpe’s total with plenty to spare. Hugo shone in both batting and bowling roles, consistently displaying his prowess.
  • Colts A gave a dominating performance away from home to comfortably see off the opposition. The whole team played superbly, with the performance in the field being exceptionally good, celebrated in a positive and encouraging manner. Olivia flexed her bowling muscles to take an outstanding wicket maiden to ensure victory was Pennthorpe’s for the taking.
  • Many of the Colts B squad participated in their first hardball game at home, taking to it like seasoned professionals. Everyone bowled with pace and precision, Anaya in particular showcasing her abilities to claim important wickets. The team fielded brilliantly to give very little away, Thomas putting in a strong and assured performance at wicketkeeper. With the bat, Pennthorpe scored at a steady rate, looking certain to catch the total – until a frustrating little flurry of wickets spoilt the fairytale ending.
  • Colts C set a high standard of play throughout the game. Despite the scoreline, we showed wonderful skill in both fielding and batting. Jemima was consistent with her bowls to claim a crucial wicket when needed the most, whilst Harry provided support and back up for his teammates in the field. Pennthorpe worked well as a team, making sure to communicate and give each other praise.
  • An excellent performance from the Colts Ds unfortunately resulted in a narrow loss in a closely contested match. Lily’s exceptional bowling resulted in a stunning wicket maiden, while Stanley and Michael each secured crucial wickets with an impressive catch and bowling.
  • Colts E and F had tough away days at St Edmunds, but had enjoyable games nevertheless, playing with the right mindset and team spirit until the very end. Strong bowls and big hitters from St Edmunds left Pennthorpe fighting an uphill battle, but positivity persevered and both teams kept on going. Pia collected important balls with her defence of the boundary, whilst Hattie delivered some testing bowls that highlighted her excellent development so far this season.
  • A great display of cricket from both teams on Thursday for the U9 As. Pennthorpe opted to bat field first and quickly demonstrated their accurate bowling with very little wides/no balls. St Edmunds illustrated their strength with the bat, reaching a strong total of 310. After the swap, Pennthorpe were faced some outstanding bowling from a number of St Edmunds players, the likes of which some of our players had never experienced. It was a steep learning curve but everyone managed to adapt to the new pace but unfortunately couldn’t reach the total set. Sam gave distinguished performances in both departments to influence the game as much as he could.
  • The U9 Bs fielded first and kept their score low. Calm and composed on the field, we communicated and took some early wickets. When it was our time to bat, we had 4s and 6s in our head! Strong batting from everyone helped us to victory, Frankie leading the way with a torrent of hits to seal the deal.
  • Honours were shared for the U9 Cs, as they played a simply amazing game of cricket to be a part of. Edward H bowled beautifully to restrict the opposition, supported by his teammates in the field who made vital catches to keep the score low. With the bat we did well to catch their total, but couldn’t quite find the edge needed to take the win.
  • U9 Ds showed their resilience and teamwork in a very tricky game. Elise lead the way with her sheer determination and enthusiasm, ensuring that no spirits were dampened by the rather heavy defeat.

We also participated in two Athletics competitions this week, in which both Pennthorpe experience great success, with multiple students qualifying for National Finals – a fantastic result!

With Y8 away next week, Y7 take the helm again for fixtures, whilst years 5 and 6 begin their practice for upcoming house cricket matches!
