This week, our Year 3 children embarked on a captivating journey through time, exploring the vast and fascinating British Empire during the reign of Queen Victoria. Their classroom was transformed into a hub of discovery as they took part in an immersive history lesson led by Mr Franklin.

Using a combination of pictures, questions, and detailed maps, the children began their “tour” by investigating the many countries that once formed part of the British Empire. From India to Canada, Australia to parts of Africa, they learned how Britain’s influence spread across the globe and how this shaped the world we know today.

One of the highlights of the lesson was exploring what life was like for children living in the Victorian Era. Through stories, images, and group discussions, pupils reflected on how different – and often difficult – life could be for children over a hundred years ago. They discovered how some children worked long hours in factories or as chimney sweeps, while others were sent away from home in search of a better life in distant colonies.

The session sparked thoughtful conversations about the realities of empire, migration, and childhood. The children were particularly curious about how young people their own age adapted to life in such different environments, and how these experiences compare to their own lives today.

By the end of the lesson, Year 3 had not only developed a deeper understanding of Victorian history and the British Empire, but also sharpened their critical thinking and curiosity about the past.

A big thank you to Mr Franklin for bringing history to life in such an engaging way. The children are already looking forward to their next historical adventure!
