At Pennthorpe, we believe childhood should not be rushed. Every child develops differently, and the move to senior school should happen at the moment that feels right – academically, socially and emotionally.

For many families, keeping children in a nurturing prep school environment until the end of Year 8 offers something incredibly valuable: time.

The early teenage years are some of the most important in a child’s development. These are the years when confidence grows, friendships deepen, interests emerge and children begin to understand who they are. At Pennthorpe, Years 7 and 8 are not simply a bridge to the next stage, they are a hugely important part of the journey in their own right.

Our pupils continue to benefit from exceptional pastoral care, inspiring teaching and a close-knit community where they are truly known as individuals. They are challenged and encouraged, while still enjoying the security and support that allows them to thrive.

There is also something quietly transformative about being among the oldest pupils in the school community. By Year 8, Pennthorpe children naturally grow into leadership roles. They support younger pupils, represent the school and develop confidence through responsibility and trust.

We also believe these years should still feel like childhood. That is why we are intentional about creating an environment where pupils can focus on friendships, learning, creativity and simply being present with one another. Our no phones on site approach is part of this, giving children the space to connect face-to-face and grow up with confidence, away from the constant distractions of the online world.

For parents, remaining at Pennthorpe until Year 8 also provides reassurance. It offers more time to understand your child’s strengths, personality and aspirations before making important decisions about senior school.
