Facing some of the big names in the local independent school circle, the girls remained undefeated in the group stages, setting the tone with a 1-0 win over Brighton College – Lexi’s stunning long-range strike finding the bottom corner. Hard-fought draws against Ardingly (1-1) and Great Walstead (0-0) followed, Matilda making last-ditch tackles and blocking a flurry of shots to keep us level. A final 1-0 victory over St Christopher’s, thanks to Tilda’s crucial (and incredibly casual) fingertip save, secured second place in the group and a spot in the 3rd-place playoff against Lancing Prep.
With the recent defeat from Wednesday’s fixture still fresh in their minds, the team dug deep, winning their individual battles and creating plenty of chances early on. With four minutes left on the clock, Harriet capitalised on Alice’s corner to net the winning goal, poking home from close range. With time ticking away, Lexi, Romilly, and Zahira defended superbly to see out the victory.
A huge well done to the whole team, who look to go again this Wednesday in Pennthorpe’s own U13 Girls Football Festival!
