Pennthorpe Means Tested Bursaries

A means tested bursary system offers potential financial assistance to pupils who might not otherwise be able to benefit from the education offered by Pennthorpe.

Eligible parents and guardians could benefit from a fee discount of up to 100% of the fees, depending on the individual circumstances of each applicant.

The amount of the Bursary award is not decided by the child’s level of academic ability but by the extent of financial need and Pennthorpe’s available resources. Any bursary awarded will be means tested on an annual basis.

Pennthorpe 7+ Goddard Scholarships

Pennthorpe’s Goddard Scholarships aim to provide opportunities for children entering Year 3, who show potential talent in particular areas (Academic, Creative Arts, Performing Arts, Sport or All Rounder), in addition to an outstanding attitude to learning and strong all round potential to achieve and perform. Through these Awards, we have the opportunity to recognise, celebrate and nurture excellence from both current pupils and those wishing to join our school. Pennthorpe pupils enjoy a robust and diverse enrichment programme, whereby those children who demonstrate potential are nurtured and their abilities channeled through additional workshops, speakers, visits and challenges. No pressure is necessary to fulfil potential but the opportunities are vast and are successful in enabling children to further explore any gifts, talents and abilities.

Any Scholarships awarded will remain valid until the end of Year 6, providing that the Scholar meets the terms of the Award, at which point there will be an opportunity to apply for a Braby Scholarship for Year 7 entry (see below). The fee discount awarded will range between 5% and 75%.

All Goddard Scholarship applicants must be registered for entry to Pennthorpe and have undertaken a Taster Day at the school, or be existing Year 2 pupils. Each Scholarship will be assessed using its own criteria but all candidates will enjoy an informal interview with the Headmistress. Whilst this sounds terribly formal for a little person, they are simply required to bring an object they would like to show and share with the Headmistress, at the same time as enjoying some hot chocolate and biscuits. This might be a Lego model they have made, a scrapbook or a favourite book for example.

Pennthorpe 11+ Braby Scholarships

Pennthorpe offers 11+ scholarships and bursaries to talented young people. The areas of talent which are recognised at age 11 for Year 7 entry are outlined below.  In line with all IAPS schools, awards of up to 40% of full fees can be made and these can be supported (up to a total of 100%) by Bursaries where financial need is demonstrated. The number of awards given in each category depends upon the calibre of the applicants.

Braby Scholarships are available to pupils entering Year 7, whether those pupils be prospective or current Pennthorpe pupils. Named after Pennthorpe’s founding brothers Herbert and Sidney Braby, who moved the school to its current site in Rudgwick in 1948, the awards are given for excellence in any of the following areas:

  • Academic
  • Art
  • Design Technology
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Sport

We value our scholars highly, looking to Braby Award holders to enhance the school community. By their attitude as well as their actions, they enrich the life of the school. We believe that any true sense of achievement comes from on-going application and our scholars’ lives should reflect both dedication and commitment as they give time and energy to their particular award areas, without detracting from their involvement in other aspects of the school. In this way they become role models for their peers, whilst making the most of their talents and learning lifelong lessons of leadership.

All external candidates who wish to apply would complete the school’s usual entrance procedures, including completing a Cognitive Ability Test, an interview with the Headmistress and attending a Taster Day.

Current school reports, confidential references and performance in an interview with the Headmistress or a member of the Senior Management Team, are also taken into consideration.  All candidates need to demonstrate potential to apply for a 13+ scholarship to senior school.
