About Pennthorpe

About Pennthorpe

Pennthorpe is a co-educational independent preparatory day school for children ages 2 to 13 years. We are renowned for our innovative curriculum, exceptional pastoral care, immaculate, child-friendly campus and excellent record for Scholarships and Common Entrance results. The school is located in the heart of the village of Rudgwick, along the Surrey/Sussex border. The campus has been arranged with thought, around the terraces of the Main House and magnificent woodlands. With superbly kept sports fields spilling out from the school into the pastoral idyllic beyond, Pennthorpe is a unique estate which pupils and staff are equally proud of.

Our motto at Pennthorpe is “non nobis solum nati“: “born not for ourselves alone“.  It derives from a sentence in Cicero’s treatise On Duties (Latin: De Officiis). The full sentence reads: “non nobis solum nati sumus ortusque nostri partem patria vindicat, partem amici” (“Not for us alone are we born; our country, our friends, have a share in us”; De Officiis, 1:22) something we believe in strongly.  As a result, at Pennthorpe we aim to instil empathy and social responsibility alongside academic ambition.

Please get in touch if you’d like to know more about us.  We’d love the opportunity to welcome your family and for you to meet ours.
