Years 1 and 2

In Year 1 and 2 our 5 to 7 years olds continue to build on the strong foundations laid down in the Early Years. We develop the children's independence and aim to promote a positive, enthusiastic and enquiring attitude to learning. We enjoy practical investigations in all subjects from maths and science to English and topic work.

We are able to use all the school facilities - the playing fields, Sports & Drama Hall, the school library, science lab and chapel. Every classroom has an interactive whiteboard which is used to enhance learning and develop skills in an exciting and interactive way.

Our aim is to fulfil each child's individual abilities. Topics are chosen to stimulate both boys and girls and their different learning styles. Children work independently, in pairs, mixed ability groups and at times are grouped by ability for Maths and English work where either additional support or extension work is required. This happy and secure learning environment enables each child to feel valued and confident.

We have a wide range of reading scheme books which provide the breadth and depth of vocabulary to develop reading skills at every level. Alongside the reading programme, daily phonics, creative writing and comprehension skills are an essential part of the week .

Our curriculum is wide and varied and includes specialist teaching in French, Music, and the Performing Arts, along with weekly swimming lessons at Billingshurst Leisure Centre.
