Design and Technology summary -
At Pennthorpe, pupils have the opportunity to work with a wide range of tools, machinery and resources. Through a wide range of projects, from Reception to Year 8, they are able to gain knowledge of processes and techniques enabing them to think and intervene creatively to problem solving activities, as individuals and members of a team.
Each year our pupils work through and solve a number of problems and challenges:
Reception
D & T in the foundation stage is covered through activities in knowledge and understanding of the world and physical and creative development.
Year 1
Pupils will learn basic sewing techniques,explore simple lever mechanisms, design and make model houses and make an underwater scene.
Year 2
Pupils wil learn printing techniques, make a stained glass window, improve their sewing skills,and explore winding mechanisms.
Year 3
Pupils will make a wattle wall,explore pneumatics and design and make their own smoothies and look at packaging.
Year 4
Pupils will make their own elastic band powered buggies, design and make bridges and work with circuits to construct their own working lighthouses.
Year 5
Pupils will make a working siege engine and research, design and make their own playground.
Year 6
Pupils will research, design and make their own marble runs using a wide range of tools, techniques and resources.
Year 7
Pupils will be challenged to produce an innovative design solution to a problem. The egg challenge.
Year 8
Pupils will research, design and make a grand design house, an authentic Italian pasta dish and make medieval siege engines, like trebuchets.
