You can't escape Art and Design at Pennthorpe!
Every wall and corridor, every nook and cranny is used to exhibit children's works of art, giving inspiration to those who work at and visit the school. We believe that art is of fundamental importance, not only in developing self expression, but also in increasing confidence and awareness of the world around us.
All the activity is focused in the Art Centre with its central design room, flanked by a build room and a dedicated ICT suite. Every pupil from Year 3 upwards has a 70 minute art lesson every week and the facility is open to pupils during lunchbreaks and through after school clubs and portfolio groups. The centre has a busy but relaxed atmosphere and there's no need to be a Michelangelo to enjoy art!
The programme at Pennthorpe is both broad and ambitious. As well as focusing on contemporary design and art, pupils study different cultures and ancient techniques. In the course of a single year pupils may look at topics as diverse as fashion, album cover design, technical drawing and aboriginal cave painting. And for those not yet captivated there's every chance that computer-generated design, Adobe Photoshop, carpentry, pottery, puppet making or web design might just inspire!
Everyone who visits is struck by the quality and quantity of the artwork they see and senior schools have been similarly impressed. The reputation of Pennthorpe's Art Department has been endorsed by a succession of awards. In recent years Pennthorpe pupils have received an extraordinary 15 top Art Awards, while a similar number have used their art to support all- rounder scholarships. We hope the gallery attached here will give you a small taster of how that success has been achieved.
